Piramal art residency - 2017

Description: This was twenty-one days of residency, Theme of residency was 'Thinking Through Traditions' concept revolves around craft art in India, it was a collaboration between rare craft art practicing artisans and Contemporary artist. My proposal for the residency was how can I use traditional form and craft material to create new imagery.
Here in the drawing, I am using a linear structural drawing of traditional armature used during Navratri, this armature is used to construct the garlanded abstract form which is worshipped for Nine days in my Ancestral house which is in Chendani Koliwada (fishing Village) in Thane City, a central suburb of Mumbai, India. I used it's linear form to develop a new manipulated hungry goddess, forms used to decorate linear drawing are marine species.
In sculpture also I have used armature of another Goddess 'Sakatchaut' which is also a permanent structure in every Fishermans house of Koliwada (fishing village). But here I used lemon and chilies Totem which is a traditional and popular form in India And gave it an alternate shape. The red color was used as the color politic symbol of different sects in Hindu religion this one is matched to 'Kumkum' a color used to represent married women and multiple contexts in Hinduism.
